Basic Counselling Skills Course
Tutor: Julie O'Brien
Counselling involves listening to people in a way that means you can attend to what they are telling you with respect, empathy and as non-judgmental an attitude as you can congruently manage. Doing this requires presence, the
ability to build rapport, compassionate observation, a tolerance for silence and the ability to contain your own process, and attend to self-care. Also
important are an awareness of the experience and assumptions you bring from your own family of origin and heritage, and an understanding that you
practice in the context of a bi-cultural nation and multi-cultural society. This course introduces you to these basic theoretical and practical counselling skills,
and is suitable for those who have no formal counselling experience and are considering doing the Psychosynthesis Counselling Training. A prerequisite is
to have completed or be currently undertaking the Foundation Year.
